Tim Holtz is a popular artist and demonstrator and has been seen on the now defunct Carol Duvall Show, traveled all over the world teaching and in many rubber stamp & scrapbook stores across the United States.  He is a senior educator for Ranger Ink and has worked in conjunction with several other companies to bring us some really cool product.  We are quite happy to be sharing the Tim Holtz product line from Design Originals.  Many of our embellishments are the perfect compliment to the projects in his book, Distressables and doo-dads.

anna_layered_collage_pinuse.jpg
Anna Hankins Layered Collage Pin

My dear friend, Anna Hankins, recently has had the joy and privilege of taking some Tim Holtz class at the Queen's Ink store close to where she lives in Maryland.  I wish we had that store here in Ohio-looks like fun.  She created this collage pin using some of Tim Holtz products and I think it is so pretty.  I hope it inspires you in your creativity and to use things creatively together for purposes they were not specifically made for.

spinnersuse.jpg

Tim Holtz Idea-ology Game Spinners~These are just a fun item...fun...fun...fun.  Used in conjunction with some of the other idea0ology products you can come up with a unique project for cards, scrapbooks, altered art, jewelry, etc.  There are 24 spinners in all in 4 different sizes and come in 3 finishes- copper, pewter look and antique gold.  It also comes with 24 brads. The sample at the top of the page shows a project using the spinners and sprocket gears.

Book with Film Ribbon Tape

Tim Holtz Idea-ology Film Strip Ribbon~This is pretty cool stuff.  It is a plastic film strip complete with punched projector holes to mimic the vintage projector rolls from days gone by.  It comes packaged in a metal mini tin and perfect for storage of the film ribbon and something else when you have used all the ribbon up.  It can be used as eyeglass frames- as shown in the sample of "art girl"; border on books, cards, scrapbooks, hide faces or other pictures you want to enhance- so many possibilities.  There is also another sample where I used it on the cover of my grunge book from my Artful Voyage trip to Mexico with Tim Holtz.  You can use glue to adhere it, paper clips, eyelets, brads, staplers- many options.  Pkg of 3 yards.  (Check out the sample cards using the film strip ribbon & Audrey Hepburn stamps at the bottom of this page)

artgirluse.jpg
My "art girl"- Stampers Anonymous Stamp

This is my little "art girl" from a class with Wendy Vecchi on the Artful Voyage to Mexico.  This is one of her stamps made by Stamper's Anonymous.  She was stamped on grunge paper and colored using some Distress ink pads and some paper nibs to add color to the smaller areas, like eyes, mouth and cheeks.  She has the film strip ribbon adhered with 1 staple on the bridge of her nose to simulate eyeglasses.  I just love her.

hitchesuse.jpg

Tim Holtz Idea-Ology Hitch Fasteners~I really liked using them in a recent project.  Before I used them, I kind of thought...why??? but after using them-they are pretty cool.  I used them in a hole that would accomodate most brad sizes- we then passed a jump ring over the "hitch" part and hung a key from another jump ring.  You could also tie ribbon from it, hang charms- just about anything.  You can use to connect 2 items together also.  This comes in 2 parts- the "hitch" ball part and the screw bottom.  It comes in a package of 12 fasteners in 3 different finishes-antique copper, gold and silver.
$3.99

cigarboxuse.jpg

This was a black cigar box- some special edition one, I purchased form the thrift store.  I covered the top and front with Graphics 45 paper, used a Gr. 45 paper tag on the top (Mona) and gave her a lovely Articus Studio crown along with the large and beautiful fleur de lis charm and on the right corner of the box, I used a small, rectangle "create" charm and cut the ring off using the Tim Holtz scissors (they go from paper to metal-don't have to look around for any other kind of scissor and they are great for cutting unmounted rubber).
I added the Tim Holtz hitch fasteners on the front as drawer pulls.  There are only 2 drawers- the top is not a drawer, but looked better with 3 fasteners than 2.  The fasteners are just glueed on using Claudine Hellmuth matte medium gel.  The drawer front was actually too thick to use the screw that comes with the hitch fastener.

wordsticksuse.jpg

Tim Holtz Idea-ology Word Sticks~These metal sticks come with a word debossed into each stick.  The words include love, live, wish, hope, find, muse, time. hold, kiss, life, play and know.  Each stick measures 1 1/2" high and 1/2" wide.  You can wear as jewelery, hang off books or other projects or adhere with your favorite Articus Studio adhesive.  Pkg of 12 stick.
$4.99

typecharmsuse.jpg

Tim Holtz Idea-ology Type Charms~I like the look of these- I am a big fan of pewter looking things and the charm base reminds me of pewter although they probably call it an antique silver finish.  You get 16 charms, 32 alphabet stickers (they look like vintage typewriter keys) and 16 epoxy stickers.  You can apply the epoxy sticker dome over the alphabet sticker and charm and you have 1 great looking addition to a book, charm bracelet, necklace, etc.  You can also cut or punch your favorite paper, photo, etc. to add to the charm- it measures 1/2" in diameter.
$7.99

washersuse.jpg

Tim Holtz Idea-ology Washers~Some things you like at sometimes and just wonder why...until you use them.  I used these recently on a project and liked them.  They can be practical and functional or just another cool embellishment.  We used them in the practical application with a brad.  You insert the brad over your paper or whatever, and then put the washer on the back- it adds stability to the item.  We also did a neat little fold on the brad leg, once we had the brad and washer on - spread out the legs of the brad and then we used a flat head plier and folded the brad leg back onto itself.  It shortened it- nice trick if your item is shorter than the brad and also gave it an extra stability.  You could add them with jump rings to bracelets, necklaces, chain, etc.  Use these when the hold in the object you are securing is too big or to create the look of a faux rivet.  Don't forget to use your Staz-on ink and stamp on them too for a different look.  These come packaged in 3 different finishes, antique silver, gold and copper.  Package of 48 washers.
$3.49

jumpsuse.jpg

Tim Holtz Idea-ology Jump Rings~These jump rings come in 2 different sizes and 3 different finishes, antique silver, gold and copper.  Use jump rings to hold things together, hang things from and connect things.  If you are not familiar with jump rings, you don't pull them apart- you open them by holding onto each side and twisting open in opposite directions.  You close them by reversing that process but just going a little past where the 2 points line up, you then release it and then click into place.  These are a little different finish than what you commonly come across in the stores- typically just gold and silver- so they are a refreshing addition to your stash.
Package of 75 jumpr rings.
$2.99

snap2suse.jpg

Tim Holtz Idea-ology Snaps~Fun little item- great little embellishment to use as a snap or individually.  It comes in 3 different finishes, antique silver, gold and copper to coordinate with the other IDea-ology products.  Pkg of 24 snaps.
This item was discontinued and no longer available.

cr2wn2use.jpg
Embellished Wood Crown Cutout

I used the Tim Holtz Snaps to embellish the top peaks of the crown.

17243use.jpg

Tim Holtz Idea-ology Mini Paper Clips~These mini clips come in assorted colors of antique silver, antique gold and antique copper.  You get 48 clips in all.  They are very cute, they measure approx. 5/8" high and approx. 1/4" high-about half the size of a regular paper clip and the same width as one.  Use them to clip paper embellishments to your books, scrapbooks, etc.  or just glue them on as an embellishment, use with Stickles glitter glues too.  These are noew for 2009.  Pkg of 48 clips.
$3.49

musetknuse.jpg

Tim Holtz Idea-ology Muse Tokens~ You get a set of 12 tokens, 4 each of 3 different colors, copper, antique gold and antique silver.  Each token has an alphabet letter cut out in the center of it and each one has a word stamped on it that begins with the cut out letter.  The words include: significant, excellence, journey, unique, wonderful, moments, lifetime, courageous, thoughts, knowledge & genuine.  They resemble a coin or an old subway token.  These are a great item to add that special touch to a special project.

My Muse Token Flower

This flower was made with a Wendy Vecchi stamp on my Artful Voyage trip.  I added a muse token along with with a Idea-ology flower charm and brad.

gearsuse.jpg

Tim Holtz Idea-ology Sprocket Gears~You get a set of 12 gears- 3 each of 4 different styles and 3 different colors, copper, antique gold and antique silver.  They range in diameter from the smallest gear- approx. 3/4" wide to the largest at approx. 1" in diamater.  Some of them are completely open in the center so you could use them as a frame.  The other 3 styles have center holes so you can easily adhere with a brad or just glue them onto your projects.  Very cool- a great addition to any project. (There is a sample closer to the bottom of the page using some wood blocks, sprocket gears & philosophy tags & snaps).

atc9use.jpg
Corrine's ATC card with gear on it

clips11use.jpg

This is an ATC I made for the Tim Holtz Mexico cruise swap.  It has one of the little gears from the set above on it, along with a neat gear stamp from Stampin' Up and a face stamp - not sure who made that one but I just recently acquired it at a craft yard sale and like it alot.

Tim Holtz Idea-ology Hinge Clips~Yeah! the clips are back.  These are a great addition to your 1x3 glass slides to use as a bail to run your ball chain or cording through.  These are also great embellishments on your books and other projects.  These clips are a black patina like finish.  They remind me of the black patina memory frames.  They almost look like a silver under the right light- chameleon clips.
Pkg of 15 clips.
$2.99

tokensuse.jpg

Tim Holtz Idea-ology Philosophy Tags~ You get a total of 12 brass tags that come in a antique brass or brass ox color- 8 tags and 4 tags in an antique silver tone.  Each tage is stamped with a 4 digit number and also a word.  Some of the words include:  inspire, simplify, believe, destiny, imagine, listen, breathe, wander, cherish, artful, altered and journey.  Use your trinket pins to adhere them to your favorit project.  They are flat backed and can be easily adhered with your favorite Articus Studio adhesive.  They have holes punched at the top so you can also use your brads to attach to a project.
Pkg. 12 tags.
$4.99

pinsuse.jpg

Tim Holtz Idea-ology Trinket Pins~You get a total of 15 different pins.  These pins each have a number on them and also a word printed at the top.  Some of the words include:  fragile, snippets, tidbits, memento, ideas, treasures, thoughts, stuff, elements and ideas.  this is a great way to add a memento, embellishment or other item to your art project.  They come in a brass ox or antique looking brass color.   Pkg. of 15 pins.
$3.99

numrlsuse.jpg

Tim Holtz Idea-ology Numerals~If you are beating yourself up looking for this product- look no more- they discontinued it at the end of 2009.

fragsuse.jpg

Tim Holtz Idea-ology Line, Fragments~I used these on a project when I took a class with Tim Holtz at CHA 2008.  It was a great project- we took a square frame from Ikea, painted it using the Cut & Dry foams- which was wonderful to paint with because they didn't absorb the paint.  We added pictures, paper, alphabets to the back of the fragments with Ranger Glossy Accents, set them aside to dry and made other things to put on the frame.  The fragments were great.  The Rangler glossy Accents dried clear and they give such dimension to the project.  One of these days, I will have the project sample posted.  Previously, I had used the pre-drilled fragment pieces on a necklace with paper behind it.  They no longer sell them that way so you will have to drill your own.  They come in several different sizes so are handy for many projects.  I saw one of the Tim Holtz metal storage cases recently at the Stamper's Anonymous booth and they had it decorated with the fragment pieces on it.  They are clear and you can also stamp on them.  Use your alcohol inks on them too.   You get a package of 48 tiles.
$9.95

frags2use.jpg

Tim Holtz Fragments "Charms"~This is a set of 48 acrylic pieces in assorted shapes and sizes of circles, ovals, rectangles and squares.  They are clear so you can adhere them over a favorite picture, collage, book, patterned paper, words, etc. to add dimension and height.  These tiles can be inked also.  Add to your scrapbooks, frames, cards, altered books and projects and so much more.  They will also makre great ornaments to hang from your tree.  Pkg of 48 shapes.
$9.95

fldelis1use.jpg

This is one of the Framents Charms pieces.  I used an image I had stamped and adhered it to the back of the Framents piece using Ranger Glossy Accents.  I then added the fleur-de-lis brass charm to the front-it mimics the stamped fleur-de-lis image.

frag1use.jpg

Another stamped image adhered to the back of a Fragments charm.  You may have a stamp that you only like part of and not the whole stamp, you can utilize it by using your favorite part with the Framents acrylic pieces.  You can add a jump ring to the charm and use as a key ring, Christmas ornament (use your favorite vintage Christmas wrapping paper), create an art ornament tree on a tiny green tree and keep in your craft room for inspiration, encase your grankdkids pictures in a Fragment and then add the fragments to a wide wood frame.  The fragments are also a great way to use up smaller paper bits.

1853use.jpg

Tim Holtz Idea-ology KeyHoles~The picture shows the assorted shapes and sizes of keyholes that come in the package.  There are 10 keyholes in all- 2 of each shape and also includes long fasteners (brads).  They come in antique gold, copper and silver (like a pewter look).  Too many possibilities!  (There is a sample closer to the bottom of the page using one of the keyholes and sprocket gears).
$7.25

17254use.jpg

Tim Holtz Idea-ology Mini Masks-Regal~You receive 2 separate masks, regal crown and an ornate flourish.  These are smaller masks and measure approx. 2 3/4" wide and 1 5/8" high on the crown and approx. 3 1/2" high and approx. 2 1/8" wide on the beautiful flourish.  They will add a very interesting look to your books, scrapbooks, cards, etc.
$1.99

maskthuse.jpg

Tim Holtz Idea-Ology Line Flourish Mask~This is a beautiful flourish mask.   The picture is deceiving though, as it is large.  It measures approx. 11" long and approx. 5" at its widest.  What is nice though, is you can use it in whole or part for a smaller project.  Turn it top to bottom, side to side, etc.  This is basically a stencil.  There are instructions on the back as to how to use the mask.  It is easy.  It has a tacky repositionable adhesive so it will stay in place on your project while you apply your medium of choice (ink, acrylics, chalk, etc.) over the stencil.   You get 1 mask that is re-usable over and over.
$2.99

timeworks_maskuse.jpg

Tim Holtz Ideo-ology Timeworks Mask~ These are fairly large masks- but gorgeous.  You get 5 masks in all, the largest is the clock which measures approx. a little more than 5" in diameter.  The 2 masks at the left measure approx. 2 6/16" in diameter.  The small gear at the right that looks like a steering wheel  measures approx.  1 15/16" in diameter and the solid gear measures approx. 3 1/8" in diameter.  You can use all or part of the timeworks and use them over and over again.  Great for backgrounds or foregrounds of your projects.
$2.99

17252use.jpg

Tim Holtz Idea-ology Mini Mask-Florets~This mask has 7 different items on it, lovely vine flourish, leaves, 2 smaller flowers and a larger flower.  As an item of reference, the large flower measures approx. 1 5/8" in diameter.  You can think of it as a stencil too and use to apply design to a smaller surface by rubbing, brushing or spraying color to it.
$1.99

17253use.jpg

Tim Holtz Idea-ology Mini Mask-Compass~This mask measures approx. 3" in diameter.  Great mask to use as the focal piece of your project or in conjunction with ships, shells, lighthouses, sun, moon and stars projects.  I think it would make a cool halo too.
$1.99

DID YOU KNOW.....When you get your new mask and it has a lot of little parts to pull off it before you use it- like the compass, lay it on copier paper first and burnish it onto the paper.  Then peel the mask off and all the little bits will be left on the copy paper- no fuss- no muss!

DID YOU KNOW....If you mask looses its adhesive/repositionable ability- don't throw it away- just wash it with soap and water, let it air dry and the adhesive comes back.

DID YOU KNOW......if you are stamping over your mask, wipe it off before you remove it from your project and then store back on the storage sheet it comes with.

thsuse.jpg

Tim Holtz Non Stick Scissors~ These scissors are manufactured by Tonic Studios.  Before I had these scissors I had another pair made by Tonic and just loved them- I swear I could cut straighter with them!  Anyhow, there are several features I like about these scissors: they are non stick, the handles are Kushgrip handles- large sized for bigger hands and work with smaller hands too.  The Kushgrip handles- if you squeeze them, they will collapse in partially so you have less fatique with your hands.  These scissors are resistant to rust and corrosion, a micro serrated edge for great detail cutting and come with a protective plastic cap.  What I like the best about these scissors is if you are cutting metal and then want to cut paper, you don't have to change scissors!  The overall length of the scissors (including handle) is approx. 6 3/4".
$12.49

th22use.jpg

Tim Holtz Distressables 2~ It's finally here and it is great!  If you have the first  Distressables book, you will love this one just as much.  It uses all the wonderful Design Orignals line of Tim Holtz cardstock that we carry.  Some of the project names include:  mini stitched booklets, enameled collage tins, distressed ruler bookz, beeswax collage, custom art tools, dimensional lettering, projects using microscope slides and memory glass and much more.

thzuse.jpg

doo-dads Cutable Strips, Letter Squares~  Words and images for collage, miniatures, jewelry and more.  Many of the projects in the Distressables book incorporate these great little strips.  These are designed to be cut up.  When cutting, leave about a 1/8" to sand.  Just take your emery board or any other sanding tool and sand your edges, this allows the distress ink to absorb better.  These are sturdier and thicker than card stock.  They measure approx. 12" high and 2 1/2" wide.  You get 2 complete alphabets; words-dream, travel, memory, explore; 3 small postcards, 10 small posters and 2 world maps.  Acid Free.
$0.85

throckcandycracklepaintuse.jpg

Tim Holtz Distressable Crackle Paint - Rock Candy~This is a clear, one-step crackle to add a special touch to your project of the day.  It comes in a plastic container with its own applicator brush inside.  After you apply the crackle, let it dry (you can speed up this process with a heat gun) and then you can apply a dark ink or translucent paint over the top so that the darker color sinks into the cracks.  I like to use the Distress Ink Pads for this step.  It comes in a 2 ounce bottle.

My Mexico Book Cover

On the Artful Voyage to Mexico cruise, Oct., 2009, we were given a Tim Holtz Grunge Book and throughout the trip, we could record our memories in it. This is the cover of the book- not sure if I am finished or not- but it has alphabet letters that were colored with Ranger black acrylic ink dabbers, Tim Holtz Idea-ology typecharms to spell out Mexico and film strip ribbon across the bottom adhered on both sides with staples.  Also, the grungeboard was covered with Claudine Hellmuth Sticky Back canvas that had the map of Mexico photocopied on it.  Great stuff!

FYI~The whole line of Distressables by Design Originals is being discontinued.    Tim Holtz has come out with the papers and things on a CD.  Personally, I would rather buy my paper than print it but technology is winning out.  So as these items sell out during 2008, they will no longer be available.

box22use.jpg
Corrine's Dream Cube

This was an unfinished wood cube that I painted using acrylic paint and then distressed with an assortment of Tim Holtz Distress inks.  I stamped all the sides using the distress ink-black soot and then used the Rock Candy Crackle Paint on the top.  I than made a topper with a stash of found stuff.  I had a plastic gear towards the bottom of the tower that was recessed so I put some watch parts in it and added Ranger Glossy Accents in Sepia to fill it in.  I have a picture of that below...although the Glossy Accents was not all the way dry when I took the picture so it still looks a little cloudy.  It has a 7 Gypsies crystal book knob at the top with the screw removed it came with and put a black eyelet in the top and the top of a fancy jewelry head pin.
I typed the word dream on the computer and printed it onto cream colored parchment paper and using the Idea-ology frame from Tim Holtz, I adhered it to the back and added some mica to tone down the cream of the parchment.

HOW TO distress and age~Lightly sand the edges of the cutable strips with an emery board or any other small sanding tool.  Apply your ink to the edges with a felt strip, sponge or other handy appliator.  You may get the edges too dark by applying your ink pad directly to the item.  You can color distress with walnut ink, brown stamp pads -most will work, you could dab a bit of color to a palette and dilute slightly to soften color.  Antiqueing gels work well also.  Try your Andirondack Color Wash sprays for a nice look.  These tips are for paper- most of us don't need a guide  be distressed and age, it happens every day!

I was saving my little "art girl", shown above under the film strip ribbon, for a special project and this is it.  I found a tin at a thrift store, gessoed it and did a number of things to each side.  It was so much fun..you will see different sides of it on different pages.  A chipboard shape was adhered to the back of "art girl" so she does stand out from the sides of the tin.

This came from a set of children's wood dominos- although much larger than a typical domino size.  I painted it wil black gesso and added some items from the Tim Holtz Idea-ology line like keyhole, sprocket gears and brads.  It will soon be part of a necklace.

This is another sample using the same kids wood domino as above.  I also painted this with black gesso and added some of the Tim Holtz Idea-ology line, philosphy tag (journey), sprocket gears, snaps and corners.  Because this is a little more 3-d than the one above, it scans a little blurry.  I used a round pin back on this one and wear it as a pin.
I also think a series of these wood blocks would be neat to add to a shadow frame or other frame, maybe on top of some fabric.  Just so many things to do and make.
Plus I have had many compliments when wearing this piece.

These are a couple cards I made while taking a class from our local artist, Angela Beavers.  She designed the card using the great images of Audrey Hepburn from The Stampsmith and the clever use of Tim Holtz Film Strip Ribbon.  Just love them!
